9/7/2009 Geiranger Fjord Trip

Today we left shortly after 8am and took a 3 hour boat ride into the Geiranger Fjord... probably Norways number one tourist destination. On the way there are farms up on the mountain side that used to be lived in... and are now used more for summer farm homes. But in the pictures below I point some out on the mountain side and imagine people getting up to these things. The only time they would really leave is if they were going to die because it would be too difficult to bring a dead person down. But the boat took us to the bottom of one of the paths that leads up to a farm house. It was quite a hike. This farm house is not used anymore but the King and Queen of Norway and Sweden had a party for their 50th wedding anniversary and the Queen hiked up but the Kings had to be flown in by helicopter. After the farm house which is probably half way up the mountain side, we continued up and over the mountain and hiked until we reached the small tourist town of Geiranger. Geiranger is a destination for large cruise ships and the town thrives on these tourists. And of course, it rained off and on most of our hike today. And on the way back to the school on the boat, it was really windy and the sea was quite high, I normally get sea sick but didn`t today. Jonas and I went up to the top and where getting deusched with waves and got soaking wet and it was quite funny when we came back in completely wet.. guess you had to be there. Enjoy the pictures.

The boat that took us into Geiranger and dropped us off at the bottom of the mountain so we could hike up to the farm and over the mountain to the town of Geiranger.

The farm house that we hiked up to. Also where the king and queen were.

I know its not as funny now.. but Ottar was struggling with that right leg in his shorts, and right after this photo, he fell over. This was a stop at the farm house we hiked up to.

Me... and the Geiranger Fjord.

The class going up the mountain side.

Notice the farm on the mountain side just to the right of the waterfalls... yeah, people actually lived there too.

Notice the farm on the bottom center of the photo... that was the farm that we hiked up to... Its amazing how people actually lived there.

To the left: Me above Geiranger.

To the right: Anne Marit and myself above Geiranger Fjord.

Group shot up over Geiranger...I know Andreas on the left, Joakim then the next two girls I am not sure of their names, then Ida and Elin and myself. (I gotta work on some of the names still obviously)

Willy, Matthias, and Anders resting up top in the rain next to an old farm house.

Now we are on the other side of the mountain... the small town of Geiranger which in the summer time is usually packed with cruise ships and lots of people but now its alittle more quite.

Check out the road going up the mountain side... Ato was telling me a story about someone who almost drove off the edge but the guard rail held the car up. Not sure if it was true or not?
